Technical Skills Development

For over 25 years, National Comfort Institute (NCI) has helped the HVAC industry discover new ways to ensure that residential and commercial customers enjoy the safest, healthiest, most comfortable, and energy-efficient indoor environments possible.

In support of NCI’s mission to help the industry, Rob Falke (NCI co-founder and President) chaired a committee to develop a brand new ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 221-2020, entitled “Test Method to Field-Measure and Score the Cooling and Heating Performance of an Installed Unitary HVAC System”. The purpose of ASHRAE Standard 221-2020 is to prescribe a field evaluation and test method to measure and score the performance, in terms of delivered cooling or heating capacity, or cooling efficiency, of an installed unitary HVAC system.

Join us as NCI’s David Holt and David Richardson discuss how to develop technical skills to support your future personal and professional growth:

  • Why technical training is so important to your success
  • Safety, Health, Comfort, and Efficiency drives consumer behavior
  • Stand out from the crowd – do not just blend in
  • Starting small when developing new habits
  • What your best “diagnostician” looks like
  • What an HVAC “system” really includes
  • Why customers complain on “equipment-only” installations
  • How to deliver the product your customer deserves
  • Three indoor comfort system components
  • Why YOU are the HVAC system manufacturer
  • Proper test instruments required for success
  • Earn what essential service providers deserve
  • And much more!

David Holt is the third generation of the Holt family to be involved in the HVAC industry. In 1956, his grandfather started an HVAC business in his Columbus GA backyard. David’s father took over the business in 1977 after a 21-year NAVY career. In 1991, David joined the family business after selling his service management software business, H2 Solutions. In 1992, David led the company into the high-performance HVAC approach by bringing advanced testing, diagnostics, and design practices into their operation. In 1999, the $3.5M family business was sold to a consolidator and David began his HVAC coaching and consulting career. He currently serves the industry as the Director of National Accounts for NCI.

David Richardson has been involved in the HVAC business since he was 12 years old. Upon graduation from Central Kentucky Technical College, David joined the family company as a service technician. After becoming certified in Air Balancing and CO/Combustion diagnostics in early 2002 the company’s journey into Performance-Based contracting began. David has a passion for educating others on carbon monoxide and combustion related issues, assisting Jim Davis with his CO training since 2008. He writes a monthly column for several industry publications. In addition to NCI certifications David also holds certifications as a HERS rater and BPI building analyst.
